The river and the water’s edge are beautiful. The air is so clean out here. All green and lush with trees for shade. The banks of the Delaware River are rocks and shingle. I sit, leaning back on my elbows, my feet in the cool water, looking up at the green hills on the Pennsylvania side of the water.

The sun warms my face as “Little Thing Gone Wild” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club blasts out of speakers somewhere. The scent of fresh air has been replaced with mouthwatering sausages grilling and sunscreen. Screams echo around me, and I notice it’s nearly all girls invited to the party. They’re the ones with tiny triangle bikinis practically mauling each other in some girl-on-girl fetish performance for the guys who are watching.

But the married ones, the old ladies, they stick together.

I helped them prep the picnic tables earlier with all the food brought just for today.

“Pretty girl like you shouldn’t be sitting over here all alone.” Niro swims over and kneels in front of me.

I glance around and realize I am a little isolated from everyone else.

“Just wanted some quiet,” I say.

I don’t think Niro is a bad guy. Scars run down the side of his face, and he’s missing the lobe and the top of his ear. I’ve no idea how it happened, but that’s a world of suffering right there, however it went down. But his attention is unwanted.

Creeping closer, he plants his hands on my calves before sliding them up my legs. “Well, why don’t I come and share your shade and quiet, perhaps help you relax a little?” His fingertips dig into my thighs, and I slap them away, dragging my feet away.

“I’d prefer to sit by myself.” I look over to where Uther and Clutch are deep in conversation about something. If I scream, one of them will come running. I know it.

But I don’t want to be that girl who can’t handle being in the club. At the club. It makes me question if I want to be a part of this full-time. I’m living in this weird fantasy world where I get to hang around with Clutch, but eventually, I’ll go back to some kind of normal life. One where I don’t have to worry about being an unclaimed woman.

Niro stands over me, water dripping from his frame. The guy has a decent physique, I’ll give him that, but I’m not sticking around. I attempt to stand, and he takes my hand to pull me to my feet.

“Niro. Please. I just want to go talk to my brother.” I hope the reminder that I’m Uther’s sister will get him to take a step back.

“Please. Stay,” he says, and I can smell the alcohol on his breath. “I just want to chat, Gwen. There’s something about you that’s really different than the girls we see around here. Classier. I just want a part of that for a little while. And I see you making nice with Clutch, with your brother.
